In 2001, the Ulysse Nardin Freak broke all the draconian constraints of traditional timepieces: no hands, no dial, no crown, and started a revolution in the way we think about watches and watchmaking. Even now, the number of crownless wristwatches is very small. No hands, but several. Combine all and one to get only one hyperwatch. Two extraordinary minds, Carole Forestier Kasapi - a goddess of unconventional horological thinking and Ludwig Oechslin, a philosopher and genius who brought to life what is unimaginable even today - Freak.
This year, the independent brand released the Freak S - the first automatic dual DIAMonSIL oscillator with vertical differential, in a bold combination of ceramic, titanium and gold.

The four blades provide twice the angular travel of the winding system through the oscillating weight, which can even capture the movement of small wrists. The flexible guiding mechanism reduces friction and thus improves efficiency.

Following Freak's original idea, the top bridge rotates once an hour to indicate the minutes. The carousel "floats" above an aventurine disc representing the sky and stars. It is no "coincidence" to choose the deep black mineral trim panel that shines with gold particles. It serves the never-ending universe and Ulysse Nardin's infinite concept, the Vertical Odyssey—a poetic choice with practical uses. There is a "sci-fi style" arrow on the edge of the "universe", which rotates with the entire disc and acts as an hour indicator. The detail of every visible element supports this "the sky's not the limit" idea in a very cohesive way.
The extraordinary feature of the Ulysse Nardin Freak S is the double balance with DIAMonSil technology patented in 2009 (developed by Ulysse Nardin and Sigatec, DIAMonSIL benefits from the advantages of two materials: silicon and synthetic diamond combined using plasma coating technology) . The double free-sprung balance is made of silicon and has an unusual shape and adjustable gold weights for balance and regulation. Of course, the use of a silicon hairspring is mandatory.

The 'Space Program' aspect of the Vertical Odyssey is a clear technical success, and I'm amazed by the sophisticated approach Ulysse Nardin uses. A watch so complex yet easy to wear (considering its water resistance to 30 meters) is the result of years of bold ideas, bold use of high-tech materials and a love of innovation.
